Friends of Fort DuPont Speaker Series: Delaware in Conversation

The Friends of Fort DuPont, in partnership with the Delaware City Library and Delaware Humanities, are launching a new community speaker series titled Delaware in Conversation.

All programs will take place at the Delaware City Library Community Room and are free and open to the public. Snacks will be provided, and no registration is required.

This series invites residents and visitors to explore Delaware’s history, identity and stories through engaging, accessible talks led by historians, writers and educators.


March 11 | 6 p.m.

Allies for Justice: Delaware’s Role in Brown v. Board of Education

Speaker: Kathy Doyle

The series kicks off with a look at Delaware’s role in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision. Award-winning writer and educator Kathy Doyle explores how Delaware leaders Louis Redding and Collins Seitz helped shape national change through local action.

What Does It Mean to Be a Delawarean?

Speaker: Michele Anstine

This lively and reflective program explores Delaware’s identity, its people, traditions, landscapes and shared experiences. Led by historian and folklorist Michele Anstine, the talk invites participants to consider what it truly means to call Delaware home.

Delaware’s Signers and Slavery: It’s Complicated

Speaker: Eric Mease

This thought-provoking program examines the complex and often contradictory relationships Delaware’s signers had with slavery. Historian Eric Mease encourages honest discussion and deeper understanding of Delaware’s founding history within its national context.

The Delaware Poisoned Candy Murders of 1898

Speaker: Margaret Opsata

The series concludes with a fascinating look at a shocking 19th-century Delaware murder case. Historian and writer Margaret Opsata uses court records and firsthand accounts to explore crime, justice and everyday life at the turn of the century.
